Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

While research is the hallmark of our top-ranked graduate program, undergraduates can also experience the excitement of making new discoveries through MIT’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Through UROP, qualified undergraduate students can participate in groundbreaking research either voluntarily, or for academic credit or pay.

Students participate in each phase of standard research activity: developing research plans, writing proposals, conducting research, analyzing data, and presenting research results in oral and written form. UROP projects take place during the academic year, as well as over the summer, and research can be done in any academic department or interdisciplinary laboratory.

Because there are always a multitude of diverse research projects being conducted at MIT, it is impossible to give a flavor for what kinds of projects may be available at any given time. Students should consult with their academic advisor if interested in pursuing a UROP project.
